Bernalillo is a Rio Grande valley town with real depth — a settlement predating the territory, adobe housing that has been added to for generations, the bosque cottonwood forest along the river, and acequia irrigation ditches that have been carrying water through these blocks for centuries and still do. Acequias and adobe together create a pest picture nothing on the mesa shares. PestAlly is a free service connecting Bernalillo homeowners with independent, licensed local pest control pros working Sandoval County.

Why Bernalillo

Why Bernalillo Homes Get Hit Harder Than Most

The acequia system is the defining local feature and it is genuinely different from a modern storm drain. These are open, gravity-fed earthen ditches that run on a shared schedule through gardens and back lots, so standing and slow-moving water sits within yards of houses for much of the growing season — ideal for the Culex mosquitoes that carry West Nile in New Mexico. The ditch banks are also a continuous wildlife corridor, moving roof rats, raccoons, skunks and snakes through the middle of the village.

Adobe is the other half, and it needs different thinking from frame construction. Traditional adobe walls wick moisture up from the ground where drainage is poor, and the vigas — the exposed roof beams — are solid timber that sits partly outside the wall, so they take weather at both ends. Wood-boring beetles and carpenter ants work vigas and latillas, and desert subterranean termites tube up through adobe and slab. You cannot drill and treat mud brick the way you treat stud framing.

Common Questions

Bernalillo Pest Questions, Answered

Do the acequias really cause the mosquitoes?
They are the main local source, yes. Unlike a piped storm drain, an acequia is an open earthen ditch running on a shared irrigation schedule, so there is slow and standing water within yards of houses for much of the growing season — which is exactly what Culex needs, and Culex is the West Nile carrier in New Mexico. You cannot drain a communal ditch, but you can clear your own containers and treat the shaded vegetation along your stretch.
Our house is adobe. Is treatment different?
Genuinely different, yes. You cannot drill and inject mud brick the way a technician would treat stud framing, and adobe wicks moisture up from the ground where drainage is poor, which keeps the wall base attractive. The work here concentrates on drainage away from the wall base, treating the soil line and slab, and dealing with the vigas separately — a pro used to valley adobe will approach it that way.
Small round holes and powder in the vigas.
Wood-boring beetles. Vigas are solid timber that sits partly outside the wall, so they weather at both ends and are far more exposed than framing inside a wall cavity. The powder is frass pushed from exit holes. On historic timber a borate treatment is usually the right answer rather than replacement, and keeping the exposed ends sealed and shedding water matters as much as the treatment.
Roof rats in a village this small.
The bosque and the ditch banks are why. Together they form a continuous corridor of cover and water running right through the built-up area, and roof rats travel it easily, entering at the roof line and vigas rather than at ground level. Trimming cottonwood limbs back off roofs and sealing at the parapet and viga penetrations is the durable part of the fix.
Widows around the wall base and outbuildings.
Common throughout the valley. Adobe wall bases, tack rooms, feed sheds, woodpiles and irrigation boxes all give black widows the sheltered, undisturbed space they want. Wear gloves moving stored material or opening valve boxes, keep material up off the ground and away from walls, and have those specific harbourages treated rather than only the house perimeter.
