Michigan bats are protected and cannot be excluded while pups are present, so the work is a one-way exclusion outside the maternity season followed by sealing — and on masonry that sealing takes longer than on modern construction.
Mice every autumn in a solid old house.
Harvest and the freeze arriving together. The surrounding fields are cut in September and October and Michigan’s first hard freeze follows within weeks, so the population moves at once. On an 1890s house the entries are the rim joist, old service penetrations, cellar hatches and the gap where wood meets stone — all sealable, but the work is detailed.
Are ticks a real issue this far west?
Yes. The Waterloo Recreation Area is exactly the habitat blacklegged ticks prefer — hardwood, leaf litter and deer — and Lyme cases have risen substantially across lower Michigan. A cleared and treated buffer where the yard meets the woods, plus checking after being on the trails, is a reasonable routine here rather than an over-reaction.
Termite treatment for a 19th-century building?
Almost certainly not what you need. Michigan termite pressure is low, and in old brick buildings damaged wood is nearly always carpenter ants in damp framing or plain rot where joist ends sit in masonry. Get it identified first — on this fabric, moisture repair and ventilation deliver far more than any termite product would.
