Dusk activity points to bats or flying squirrels rather than house mice, and with forest this close both are common. Nebraska bats are protected and cannot be excluded while pups are present, so the identification decides the lawful timing as well as the method. Have someone look before any work is booked.
Rats appeared when the river came up.
Predictable rather than coincidental. Norway rats burrow in the Missouri floodplain and along the bank, and rising water floods those burrows and drives the population toward dry ground up on the bluff. Sealing at grade and treating burrows before high water works far better than trapping in the aftermath.
Are ticks a genuine concern here?
Yes, and Fontenelle Forest is the reason. Deep leaf litter, mature hardwood and deer are exactly what ticks need, and Nebraska has both American dog tick and expanding lone star tick activity.
